Luffy is a member of the D Clan and was raised on East Blue's Dawn Island. He is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and the grandson of Marine hero Monkey D. Garp. Garp or Wavy Dadan raised him for most of his life as a youngster.. It was during that time period he made friends and vowed brotherhood to the late Portgas D. Ace and Sabo.In any case, Luffy's most prominent wellspring of motivation is the Pirate known as "Red-Haired" Shanks, who gave Luffy an arm to save his life and gave him the unmistakable straw hat as a sign of the commitment that they would meet again once Luffy turned into an extraordinary pirate. Additionally, he unknowingly permitted Luffy to consume the Devil Fruit, transforming his body into rubber.
Luffy has faced active resistance from several regional, national, and global powers since becoming a pirate. These forces include the Marines, the World Nobles, the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Cipher Pol, the Four Emperors who rule the New World, and the East Blue-established pirates. Despite being so young with a comparably short career, he has surmounted nearly all by successfully invading and indirectly causing the destruction of enemies Lobby, escaping the impregnable Impel Down, facilitating a number of important developments in the Summit War of Marineford, and directly defeating three Warlords and an Emperor. He also possesses the instinct to attract allies and friends, gaining respect and appreciation from many different nations, other pirates, the Revolutionary Army, and even some Marines, apart from taking care of all his crew members individually.
Given Luffy's many accomplishments, history, and general recklessness, he attained quite a lot of infamy. He attracts much bounty money with this and, especially, the World Government's particular hostility and the Marine Headquarters' main Fleet Admiral, Sakazuki. He is now known to be one of the strongest members of the Worst Generation and the unwilling leader of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet's seven crew. He is also one of the Four Emperors and has a 3,000,000,000 Beli bounty for defeating Kaidou in the Raid on Onigashima. The Awakening of the Gomu Gomu no Mi—Luffy is also hailed as the second coming of Joy Boy by some after his feats at the awakening of the Gomu Gomu no Mi after centuries.

Since the Arabasta Arc, he has had a string strap sewn on by Nami, allowing the hat to hang from his neck while fighting on his back. Luffy was briefly shown with four characters written on his right arm, spelled 3D to 2Y.
